    Bit to Do

Living in the modern ideas of globalization, it can be hard for youth to seek out and find out what is going on locally. The Goodwill is a local youth arts zine created by June Leffler in 2009 to write about and inform local youth.

The free print publication is currently celebrating it's 9th issue in two years. In honor of this momentous occasion, they have released a surprisingly sophisticated low-fi audio edition on cassette tape, CD and online.

"The program taps into an auditory scene of Louisville Youth DIY (do-it-yourself) culture," said Leffler.

I was thoroughly entertained as I listened online and surprised at the great quality I found. The audio edition is tied together with a three part radio drama called The Adventures of Johnny and El Tigre, a humorous storyline relying on what jokes and musical gags can be had over a tight knit plot.  I really enjoyed the old style jazzy transitions that transports people back to a time where radio dramas were the mainstay of entertainment. The flow of the entire audio production from beginning from end is well planned, with each bit leading into the next. It is an enjoyable pace and well edited.

Many young artistic groups are incorporated into the broad audio production such as comedians Lindsay Boling and Raanan Hershberg being interviewed by fellow comedian Tyler Jackson. Musical groups such as Ashocious and Tell Me share tracks and there is spoken word poetry by Jimmy Besseck, James Wallae, and Jill Sadowski.

A grant from the Kentucky Foundation for Women has helped make this valuable community resource possible, allowing them to distribute 300 free copies quarterly in the Highlands and Crescent Hill. The audio edition can be found at Ear X-tacy, Derby City Espresso, and Hey, Tiger for $3, or you can listen online for free at their bandcamp.
