    Bit to Do

Open wide and down the hatch, a glass of water to top it off. It’s a ritual we all know well and grow to repeat the more our bodies slip into the glow of the golden years. It’s no secret that Americans are well-medicated; most of our medicine cabinets rattle and chatter with the musical little sounds of pills in amber bottles - I had three prescriptions myself with my biscuit this morning. But when does “well-medicated” become “over-medicated”? In this country – and especially in our own Bluegrass state – that line may be a little fuzzier than we think. Is your cabinet a little too crowded?

Get the ins and outs on your home pharmacy this Wednesday, January 25th with the Library’s Boom Time Series. This third installation of the presentation series will feature Dr. Demetra Antimisiaris, a clinical doctor of pharmacy at the University of Louisville’s School of Medicine. Continuing January’s theme, To Your Health, Dr. Antimisiaris will discuss prescription safety with Your Medicine Cabinet. With a typical Kentuckian filling 17 prescriptions per year – compared to the normal United States average of 12 – Dr. Antimisiaris will expound on the risks of what she calls “The Silent Syndrome” or polypharmacy. Discuss the dangers of over-medicating the body and how you can buck America’s pill-popping trend.

Beginning at 6pm, Your Medicine Cabinet will be held at Louisville Free Public Library’s Main branch. A question and answer session will follow the presentation, and Dr. Antimisiaris will offer book suggestions for a more thorough look into medication safety. The discussion will once again be moderated by Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt, the director of the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness, a board-certified family physician.

The doctors are in; stock up on information and maybe give your cupboard an early spring cleaning.

The Library’s Main branch is located at 301 York St

    About Erin Day

I'm a Louisville native who transplanted home from Las Vegas recently. Don't ask. In my spare time I read a lot of books and drink gin. My soulmate is my 1994 turquoise Ford Ranger - they never made a finer truck. I still totally believe in the Loch Ness Monster. I just want to write for you.
