This Saturday, October 11 from 11am-1pm, the Main Library of Louisville Free Public Library invites you to take on the Global Cardboard Challenge! The Main Library will turn into a “maker space” for youthful creators and inventors who are looking to show off their artistic and creative sides. The program is inspired by the documentary, Caine’s Arcade and will celebrate the creativity inside of all children. All you have to do is bring your imagination; the library is supplying cardboard, recyclable materials, and the basic supplies to spark the creative juices. The Global Cardboard Challenge is free, open to the public, and all ages are welcome. Visit www.lfpl.org for more information.

The Louisville Free Public Library is also hosting a new exhibit this fall entitled Black Freedom, White Allies, and Red Scare and is presented in partnership with the Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research at the University of Louisville, the Courier-Journal, and UofL Libraries. This exhibit coincides with the 60th anniversary of the 1954 bombing and sedition trial of Anne and Carl Braden. In 1954, a family by the name of Wade moved into a home in the Shively neighborhood. The home had been purchased by civil rights activists Anne and Carl Braden, and the family was the first African American family on the block at that time. Segregationists bombed the home, and the Bradens were put on trial, being accused of plotting a communist takeover of Kentucky. See the exhibit marking the 60th anniversary of this piece of history that shook Louisville and the entire nation now through November 9th in the Bernheim Gallery at the Main Library. You can also take part in the film viewing and panel discussion of Southern Patriot on October 21, 7pm at the Main Library.

Related programs at the University of Louisville include:

A trial reenactment and community performance, reenacting scenes from Carl Braden's sedition trial will also incorporate community conversations about race, housing, policing, and media representation in 2014. It is October 24, 7:00 p.m., Allen Court Room, University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law.

From Freedom Summer to Ferguson: Why We Need a New Culture of Belonging: the 8th Annual Anne Braden Memorial Lecture with a reception and book signing to follow on November 11, 5:30 p.m., Belknap Playhouse, 1911 S. Third St.
