It's official, kids: school is back in session – and this means the University of Louisville Student Activity Board Film Committee is ready to rock your socks with screenings of exciting films at the Floyd Theater each and every week. They got us warmed up last week with a free outdoor showing of The Hunger Games
, and now it's time to officially jump back into the action.
It starts tonight (Thursday) with
Seeking a Friend For the End of the World.
Last year saw the emotionally traumatizing Lars von Trier film
Melancholia
, in which a runaway planet smashes into earth, demolishing it completely (don't worry, that's not a spoiler – this happens in the opening scene).
Seeking a Friend
, however, is a more lighthearted look at the idea of global annihilation. In this instance, a 70-mile-wide asteroid is on a collision course with Earth, and humanity has three weeks until extinction. After his wife runs off without a word, Doug (Steve Carell) decides to try to find and reunite with his high school sweetheart, accompanied by his neighbor Penny (Keira Knightley).
Seeking a Friend For the End of the World
is scheduled to play twice, at 5:00 and 8:00.
Return during the weekend for screenings of
, which will be playing on Friday and Saturday at 5:00 and 8:00. In a different take on the classic fairy tale, Kristen Stewart stars as the titular princess, who incurs the wrath of the queen (Charlize Theron) after being informed Snow White is the fairest of them all (Kristen Stewart? Really??). She dispatches a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) to kill her, but he instead becomes her guide and protector, teaching her how to fight in order to defeat the evil queen.
The Floyd Theater is located in the Student Activities Center on the U of L campus. Best of all, all film screenings are free! Further info can be found at the SAB Film Committee Facebook page.
