They took a break last week for Thanksgiving, but now school is back in session, and the University of Louisville Floyd Theater is back with their weekly showcase of movies on the cheap – and keep in mind that the semester is almost over, so there won't be too many more opportunities this year to see some hot recent movies on the big screen for such low prices. So, what's playing this week?
Tonight (Thursday) the Floyd is screening the documentary Bully
. It's about bullying. It's been a hot topic recently, with a serious crackdown on the problem. We've seen both the negative (horror stories of suicides) and the positive (the “It Gets Better” campaign). Director Lee Hirsch was bullied as a child and thus felt a special importance about the message. The film follows students (and their families) from five states throughout the course of the 2009-2010 school year, showing the damage that can be done by bullying.
Bully
screens at 5:00 and 8:00.
The weekend brings screenings of
, the second feature film by Martin McDonagh (
In Bruges
). Colin Farrell stars as a screenwriter who is having trouble finishing his current work. He is subjected to loads of inspiration, however, when his friend (Sam Rockwell) kidnaps a Shih Tzu belonging to a notoriously violent gangster (Woody Harrelson), and all sorts of shenanigans ensue.
Seven Psychopaths
plays Friday and Saturday at 5:00 and 8:00.
Finally, on Friday night, the Floyd presents the final midnight movie of the semester:
, Quentin Tarantino's bizarre take on World War II. Brad Pitt leads a small specialized crew of Jewish soldiers whose goal is to hunt down Nazis and instill fear in their hearts – a task at which they are quite good. When news reaches them of a special film premiere at which all of Nazi top brass – including the Fuhrer – will be in attendance, they make plans to take them all out at once. It's awesome.
