If your musical tastes run a little wide of the mainstream, then this Saturday night at Zanzabar (2100 S.Preston) looks like the place to be. WFPK and Production Simple present headliner Fanfarlo, an indie folk band from London (that would be England, not Kentucky) along with New Zealander Lawrence Arabia, and the slightly less exotic (from a geographic point of view) singer/songwriter Robert Francis who hails from Los Angeles.
Fanfarlo, touring behind their debut album, Reservoir, brings a surprising mix of guitars, violin, trumpet, and mandolin to the stage, creating a lush, romantic sound that you can check out for yourself in their video for the single, “The Walls are Falling Down.” You can also download a free, three-song EP from their Web site.
The whimsically named Lawrence Arabia is actually James Milne (The Brunettes, The Ruby Suns), who does sound a bit like John Lennon -- which is not a bad thing. Two things I like about him already: he has played bass with Okkervil River, one of my favorite bands, and Pitchfork reviewer Stephen Deusner describes him as “suave and martini sophisticated.” His new album is Chant Darling.
