It seems like everyone is absolutely sick of our present healthcare industry. From doctors and nurses to the struggling middle class, the unemployed and the impoverished, the American healthcare industry is making everyone's bowels watery.
Co-pay prices, prescriptions and discovering that a provider with great bedside manner is outside of network, are all things that make many people tear their hair out. It wouldn't be surprising if there are people out there with post-traumatic stress disorder, onset by the exorbitant cost of modern medicine.
A local group called Family Community Clinic Incorporated, recognizes the illness of America's present healthcare industry.
Located at 1406 East Washington street, on the campus of St Joseph's Catholic church in Butchertown, services of the clinic are offered for free, but voluntary donations from patients are accepted. The clinic is open on Saturdays from 8:00am to 12:00pm. All services are provided on a first-come, first-served basis to adults and children without insurance.
This clinic is of the belief that, "Through the tradition of social justice, access to affordable health care is viewed as not only essential to human life, but also as a fundamental human right." Someone ought to paste that statement on the evil gates of the Humana building.
Family Community Clinic Inc. is staffed by volunteer doctors and nurses who are prepared to offer evaluation and treatment for allergies, minor injuries, colds, infections and many other outpatient services. The clinic's only paid employee stated that there's no way to prove if patients don't have insurance, so no one is turned away.
The front of their brochure says that Family Community Clinic Inc. is, "Promoting health to the uninsured." According to data accumulated by NPR in 2009, 12 percent of adults under 65 and 4 percent of children living in Kentucky's third congressional district (Louisville) were uninsured. Considering how Jefferson County's unemployment rates have spiked worse than this writer's blood pressure, between 2009 and December 2011, the number of uninsured living in Louisville has likely increased dramatically since that study was conducted.
