A young Broadway star wants to give the whole business up for love in The Drowsy Chaperone, which The As Yet Unnamed Theatre Company will present beginning Friday.
The Drowsy Chaperone performances will take place on May 18, 19, 25, and 26 at 8 p.m. each night. Matinees are to happen on May 20 and 27 at 2:30 p.m. each day. Performances for all shows will go on in the Mex Theater at the Kentucky Center for the Arts, located at 501 West Main Street in downtown Louisville.
Tickets for each all ages show are $16 per person. All tickets can be purchased at the Kentucky Center box office, the Kentucky Center website, or by calling the Kentucky Center box office at 1-800-775-7777.
The Drowsy Chaperone is essentially a play-within-a-play that begins simply with a Man in Chair. He talks about an old recording that is his favorite named The Drowsy Chaperone, a rare 1928 musical. Once the music plays, the stage comes alive with many, many more participants.
Then, the story of a beautiful yet brazen Broadway star trying to hold on to true love comes to life. She wants to leave show business behind and get married, but a producer looks to foil those plans. Don't forget about the groom, pastry chefs who are really gangsters, a Latin lover, and plenty of hilarity.
The musical features music and lyrics from Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison and the book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar. Sandy Richens Cohrs directed the production, which features Gary Tipton as the Man in Chair.
The Drowsy Chaperone enjoyed great success on Broadway, running in 2006 and 2007 for more than 670 performances at the Marquis Theatre in New York City.
Following The Drowsy Chaperone, As Yet Unnamed Theatre Company will present The Odd Couple - Female Version. That production is slated to go on in July. More information on The As Yet Unnamed Theatre Company can be found at its website.
