There's a reason that the Bardstown Road farmer's market is the farmer's market in Louisville. They have a huge selection of products, a convenient location, and a fun atmosphere. But sometimes I have to remind myself that there's more to this city than what's in the Highlands, so I decided to check out another farmer's market this morning.

     Beechmont Open Air Market

The Beechmont Open Air Market is held every Saturday in the parking lot of Beechmont Baptist Church on Southern Parkway. It's much smaller and quieter than the Bardstown Road or St. Matthews farmers markets. This morning, there were a handful of produce vendors, a few craft booths, and a table stocked with treats from CakeFlour bakery.

There were upsides and downsides to the Beechmont Open Air Market. They had a good selection of produce basics like tomatoes and squash, but there were no meat or cheese vendors, and not much fruit, which is what I'm usually looking for. There was ample parking space, and I didn't miss dodging baby strollers, but there was no social, community atmosphere. The biggest upside for me was that I got a 60-Proof brownie from CakeFlour.

If you're just looking to grab a few locally grown tomatoes or cucumbers in a hurry on a Saturday morning, this is the farmer's market you're looking for. If you enjoy larger a variety of foods and people, I'd stick with the Bardstown Road farmer's market.
