Easter is just about two weeks away! The holiday which is all about bunnies and jelly beans and chocolate and candy and weird fake plastic grass and hunting for eggs and, I think, something about Jesus, right? We’re weird about religious holidays here in America – we like to make them non-religious. (Speaking of, how come there’s allegedly a “War on Christmas” but Easter remains non-controversial?) However, this can be remedied – perhaps a little early – by heading to Baxter Avenue Theater this Sunday, March 22, for a truly fantastic film about the life and death and re-life of the one and only Jesus Christ!
Jesus Christ Superstar is the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber play adapted to film by prolific director Norman Jewison (Fiddler on the Roof, In the Heat of the Night). Ted Neely stars as Jesus, a Jew who also happens to be the son of God. He is joined by all your favorite characters from the classic story: Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene, Paul Thomas as Peter, Barry Dennen as Pontius Pilate, and Carl Anderson as the villain, Judas Iscariot. This Biblical tale, though, is not for the faint of heart: you’d better like flamboyant 1970s musicals, because this film is just fabulous.
