Sometimes during the slump after Derby, it can feel like there’s nothing left to do but clean up the town and rest for the next big event. This year we’ve gone from one major event to another in the bourbon world, almost with no stops in between. Bourbon is booming, and those of us who love it are in the perfect location to participate in the boom.
Part of Citizen Bourbon Ambassador training is getting out and meeting Master Distillers. They are everywhere during Derbytime, but they are a little harder to find otherwise. Enter Haymarket Whiskey Bar. They host Master Distillers on the third Monday of every month at 9 p.m. These events are always free and open to the public, and they are a great way to learn about the distilleries and get your bottles signed. Bourbon Master Distillers are a friendly bunch and they are always happy to answer your burning bourbon questions.
This month, Haymarket is hosting Wes and Kyle Henderson of Angel’s Envy Bourbon (click here for details). Angel’s Envy is a unique bourbon, in that it is finished a second time in port wine barrels after aging in new oak barrels. That is to say, it is a bourbon with an extra step included at the end.
Angel’s Envy also makes one of the best Rye whiskeys I have ever had. Perhaps not surprisingly, it is very limited in supply, and it isn’t expected to make it to store shelves again for years. This breaks my heart. If you ever have a chance to try Angel’s Envy Rye, do yourself a favor and get it. It’s one that is worth the $20 or so a shot.
Mark your calendar for May 19 at 9 p.m. You won’t want to miss this chance to learn more about what makes Angel’s Envy unique.
