Actors Theatre has been the starting point for many successful plays over the years, and the 37th Humana Festival of New American Plays, which begins Feb. 27, looks to continue that trend with world premieres, ten-minute plays, and more.
Six full-length productions and a ten-minute play festival are set to take place between Feb. 27-April 7. All performances, unless otherwise noted, will happen at Actors Theatre, located at 316 West Main Street in downtown Louisville.
Ticket packages for the festival go on sale today, and single tickets go on sale Thursday. Tickets can be purchased through the Actors Theatre box office, which can be reached by calling 502-584-1205. More information on ticket packages can be found at the Actors Theatre website.
Among the plays to be featured this year include Sam Marks's The Delling Shore, which finds two novelists and their daughters dealing with professional and personal jealousies and issues during the course of a night at a lake house. The Delling Shore runs Feb. 27-April 7 in the Bingham Theatre.
Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins's Appropriate goes next, from March 5-April 7 inside the Pamela Brown Auditorium. After the discovery among their dead father's possessions, a family becomes entangled in issues of secrets, repression, and memory loss.
Jeff Augustin's Cry Old Kingdom goes next, running from March 8-April 7 in the Bingham Theatre. Under a cry for revolution during a repressive regime, a painter in hiding finds himself torn between a dream and survival.
Will Eno's Gnit follows from March 15-April 7 in the Pamela Brown Auditorium. Gnit is a man who, while looking for his true self, finds nothing but bad decisions along the way in a deliberate misreading of Peer Gynt.
O Guru Guru Guru or why I don't want to go to yoga class with you will happen at the Victor Jory Theatre between March 20-April 7. Mallery Avidon's play features Lila, who doesn't want to go to yoga class...for reasons more difficult to explain here.
Finally, the last play to open at the Humana Festival will be a series of one-acts called Sleep Rock Thy Brain. The Acting Apprentice Company will take part in a production that brings science and spectacle into the complicated and enlightened world that is the mind. Performances are to happen at the Lincoln Performing Arts School, located at 930 East Main Street in Louisville.
A ten-minute festival will take place during the Humana Festival, which will include Sara Ruhl's Two Conversations Heard on Airplanes. More plays will be announced soon.
