    Annmarie's Art Breakfast on Derby

The 5th Annual Annmarie’s Art Breakfast on Derby charged the Nucleus Innovation Center on East Market Street with a positive, fulfilling vigor. Louisvillians came as endearing dates, dressed to the Derby nines and tens, charming families dancing with delight, and artists glowing with enthusiasm for their work. This diverse and delicious brunch should be a staple of your Derby traditions every year.

Annmarie's Art Breakfast on Derby Embellish

Embellish creates lovely jewelry pieces from removing the membrane from eggshells. The crushed pieces create a mosaic design that are then glazed with water. I loved all the owls!

Dawn Marie Yankeelov, founder of the Lomenta Foundation and hostess of the annual brunch, shines when she talks about the memory of her late daughter Annmarie Campbell. Ms. Campbell’s work has an immediate emotional impact upon first notice, as it is charged with such talent and palpable relish for creation. This was an artist whose passion for life flashes brilliantly in her work. It is a poignant gesture and testament to the compassion of human spirit that Ms. Yankeelov hosts Annmarie’s Art Breakfast on Derby. She leads the Lomenta Foundation with the purpose of supporting college art students achieve their innovative dreams. It was an inspiring atmosphere of hope.

Artist Dru Pilmer, with a visionary's take on Derby.

Dru Pilmer’s paintings capture a thrilling mix of art meets science. The colors in Ms. Pilmer’s art world swirl and vibrate with compelling movement. She uses her imaginative insight to interpret unseen energy that pulsates in our natural world, inviting us to view the world in an electrifying manner. I found her art to be incredibly refreshing. Ms. Pilmer is also a Designated Linklater Voice Teacher, helping people find their natural voice while inspiring confidence through breath control and the mechanisms of the voice. One aspect I loved about this event is the wide array of talents that all banded together for such a great cause.

    Urban Art Glass

    Urban Art Glass

Kris Philipp had an inventive idea to pick up broken glass and transform it. She doesn't see pieces of glass on the street as shattered, but rather as something that could become eye-catching art. That takes a special eye and a true gift. Ms. Philipp uses the glass in whatever form she finds the shards to render it into a reconfigured sparkling sculpture. I loved seeing all the gorgeous glass given new life! Urban Art Glass can be found as one of the stops on the NuLu Trolley Hop. Check out the rejuvenated glass for yourself on East Market Street.

    Dr. Hong Ye EARTHBLENDS

Dr. Hong Ye proudly told me about EARTHBLENDS and the fulfillment of success stories.

Ms. Yankeelov also brought to Annmarie’s Art Breakfast Dr. Hong Ye, an associate professor at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center, who designed EARTHBLENDS to reduce the pain of inflammation. There were brunch partygoers who could not wait to try these herbal relief and renewal patches. Dr. Ye feels fortunate to be able to use her knowledge of Eastern and Western medicine traditions to alleviate those with chronic conditions like arthritis. This event was a melting pot of good will and creativity. Ingenuity in science is precisely what leads to breakthrough discoveries like EARTHBLENDS.

It just so happened that one of my mom's and my favorite artists there turned out to be my friend Julia's mom! Ashley Addison's oil paintings reflect the soul of the natural world in a way that you just can't stop looking at them. These paintings were quite stirring.

While Mitch Lustig, the acrobat who hailed all the way from New York initially seemed to be struck with nerves, by his second act, any misgivings had dramatically faded. He turned his physical movements into living art and hypnotized the room.

Saffron’s not only has seriously delicious Persian and Mediterranean cuisine, but their good-humored demeanor made you love the catering restaurant all the more. I most definitely am going with my friends there on our next Louisville foodie adventure.

    Art Eatables

I keep seeing Art Eatables at all the best Louisville foodie events! Their chocolate bourbon balls were powerful and richly decadent. My mom and I devoured these pretty chocolates with total satisfaction.

    The Johnny Doughnut Experience

The Johnny Doughnut Experience with Johnny Doughnut on guitar and vocals, Vicki Miller on percussion and vocals, Marty Miller on bass and vocals, and Ernie Duckwall on drums is one awesome Louisville band that I am so glad I discovered through this brunch! They are not a straight-up Beatles cover band, but they played a lot of the best Beatles tunes, in addition to many other favorites. They had a lively energy that was not over-the-top, but just right for a brunch party on Derby.

    Annmarie's Art Breakfast on Derby

Annmarie's Art Breakfast on Derby is the kind of event where you leave feeling inspired about life afterwards. So many different people united in the Nucleus Innovation Center to celebrate the extraordinary human spirit and art in all of its designs. It was a wonderful way to kick off Derby Day.
