Kentucky Historical Society-“The Makings of a Master” Kentucky Folk Art Apprenticeships" will open Thursday September 15, 2011. The exhibit will be at the Keeneland Changing Gallery in the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in downtown Frankfort, Kentucky at 100 W. Broadway .
“The Makings of a Master: Kentucky Folk Art Apprenticeships” will explore the relationship between the apprentice and the master. It draws from 60 apprenticeships that are documented by the Kentucky Folk life Program between 1993 and 2011.
Kentucky Folk life Program Director Bob Gates says this about Kentucky and its society and citizens, “The Commonwealth of Kentucky is rich in diverse cultural folk groups and master artists who carry on their traditions. Master musicians, dancers, craftspeople and other artists share a special relationship with those they teach within their communities. The Kentucky Folk life Program is proud to have documented these art forms over the past 20 years with the Kentucky Arts Council Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship program. ”
Artifact, stories of Kentucky will be shared as well as time honored traditions including storytelling, square dance, basket weaving. Opening day of the exhibition features a concert celebrating Bill Monroe’s 100th birthday. “Bluegrass Masters: A Celebration of the Bill Monroe Centennial.” Master bluegrass musician Bobby Osborne and the Rocky Top X-Press, are featured musicians at this event that will begin at 7 p.m. programs are free.
