This event was started in 1989 to promote healthy lifestyles within the student body and community and to raise funds for The Healing Place, a non-profit organization in Louisville. The Healing Place (please see www.thehealingplace.org for more information) is a homeless shelter with an innovative program of care and recovery for homeless chemically dependent people. It has been nationally recognized for its program model that has been duplicated in numerous other cities in the US. The School of Medicine has a special connection with The Healing Place because it has a medical clinic that provides care to the residents free of charge and is staffed by local health care professionals who volunteer their time. Second year students may choose to earn elective credit by working in the clinic, allowing students to not only gain more clinical exposure but also to get a better awareness of this successful community resource.
