Two four run innings from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees were the downfall of the Louisville Bats Tuesday afternoon in final of a four game series. The latter four run frame came in the sixth after the Bats had cut the Yankees’ lead to one. The Bats couldn’t dig themselves out of their final hole and fell by the final score of 9-7. The game was played at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia, NY.
The Yankees’ sixth inning began when Josh Judy, who had pitched two scoreless frames already, walked Doug Bernier and gave up a single to Kevin Russo to start the inning. Carlos Fisher entered for Judy and, after a sacrifice bunt from Corban Joseph, gave up an RBI single to Ronnier Mustelier. After walking Jack Cust to load the bases, Fisher gave up a three-run double to Russell Branyan, making the score 9-4.
The Bats would try to fight back, but couldn’t pull it out.A three-run homer from Mike Costanzo in the eighth cut the lead to 9-7 but that’s as close as they got the rest of the game.
The other four run frame came when Bats starter Sean Gallagher relinquished four walks in the third inning, three of them scoring runs. The first run of the inning came on an RBI single from Joseph.
The Yankees got on the board first with an RBI single in the very first inning from Branyan who finished the game with four RBIs.
The Bats put up single runs in the second (sacrifice fly from Danny Dorn), third (sacrifice fly from Willie Harris), fifth (solo home run from Felix Perez), and sixth (sacrifice fly from Cody Puckett).
The Bats (21-46), who have scored at least five runs in four of their last six games, failed to win their first road series of the season despite taking the first two from the Yankees (37-29). The only series win they have came April 13-16 against Columbus.
The Bats enjoy an off day tomorrow before returning to Louisville Slugger Field for the start of an eight game homestand Thursday. The Bats will play four games against the Rochester Red Wings and four games against the Yankees.
