From winter chll to spring delights for Louisville Magazine's launch party

Wednesday evening may have been chilly and dreary, but inside Gary’s on Spring on 204 S. Spring St., the only thing resembling winter was the horsehead ice sculpture acting as the centerpiece to appetizers ranging from pot stickers to fruit and cheese selections. All of this, plus Titus’ famous Tootielicious Martini and other fine adult beverages, awaited attendees of this month’s Louisville Magazine launch party, in celebration of the dual release of the publication’s Top Lawyers issue and 2013 Greater Louisville Health Guide.

Want to know what’s inside this month’s issue? Of course, there’s the annual Top Lawyers peer survey. Louisville Magazine mailed off ballots to the Louisville Bar Association in January, gathered the results, then listed the cream of the crop in alphabetical order by category, then size. Interspersed throughout are synopses of major constitutional cases in Louisville and Kentucky history.

The bulk of this month’s issue is devoted to the city’s West End, a reflection of the complex and abysmal relationship the city has within itself regarding race. Sobering statistics comparing the region west of the Ninth Street Demarcation Boundary with the East End begin the section, but the stories put together by the Louisville Magazine’s staff of writers, photographers and editors drive home the nuanced reality of life in a part of the city most Louisvillians only know from the evening news.

For those whose madness in March is related to basketball – and not, say, Le Mans prototypes in Florida (yours truly) – editor Kane Webb will take you back to November of 2012, when the Cards fought for 11 days to escape the collapsing Big East, crossing the DMZ into the ACC.

Finally, the 2013 edition of the Greater Louisville Health Guide & Resource Directory not only boasts over 2,600 physicians and dentists listed by specialty, but also has seven profiles of local medical students and residents, as well as a look at the Body Worlds Vital exhibit.

Next month’s launch party will be at Captain’s Quarters Riverside Grill from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 3. Copies of this month’s issue can be purchased at Carmichael’s Bookstore, Barnes & Noble, or online through www.loumag.com.
