In Louisville, fall means many things.

The return of college football and St James Art Fair are two that come to mind.

For Upper Highlands residents, it also means the yearly celebration to mark their great neighborhood and community.

Sponsored by many local and national businesses including Anheuser Busch, Bellarmine University, Kroger, Papa John’s and Norton Immediate Care Centers, the proceeds raised go to help support area parks and neighborhood improvements.

First up for this year’s celebration is on September 27, 2010 at O Shea’s Restaurant and Bar (956 Baxter Ave).

Come out and support their “Monday Fund Day” where 100% of the day’s proceeds go to support the Highland Community’s programs.

October 2^nd is the Highlands Cup 5k Run/Walk. This route encompasses many landmarks that make the Highlands so great!

Beginning at Douglass Blvd & Bardstown Road, the course takes you into and through Cherokee Park.

Be sure to notice all of the homes around you during your journey- some are close to a century in age!

Also on October 2^nd, come out to the Douglass Boulevard Christian Church Gym for the Pancake Breakfast.

Beginning at 8:30 am, it’s the perfect way to start your Saturday with both community and charity!

October 3^rd is the Highlands-Douglass Big Rock Jazz Fest:

Come out to the Big Rock area of Cherokee Park and enjoy the sounds of “Jags on the Rocks”, Steve Crews’ Black Cat

Band, Mike Tracy Quintet with a Brazilian Twist & The Walnut St Blues Band from 2-7 pm.

October 8^th marks the Belknap Festival Eve.

It’s the night before the marquee event for the celebration- the Belknap Fall Festival.

Come out to hear live music with food and drinks!

6-9pm at Douglass Loop area.

October 9^th is the Belknap Fall Festival.

From 11am- 9pm, at the 2200 block of Bardstown Road, visitors can enjoy 100 booths of juried regional arts and crafts, family fun, entertainment, food and live music all day long.

Admission is free to the event.

It’s a perfect opportunity to get a one-of-a-kind piece for your living room, bedroom or even outdoor space!

October 10^th is the Farmington Harvest Festival at 3033 Bardstown Road.

At this unique event, you’ll find costumed interpreters, period music, old-fashioned games, activities and crafts, archaeology, tours and food… all from the 19^th century!

Happening from 12- 5 pm, it’s your chance to learn first hand about the history and legacy of the times.

October 14^th marks the final event for the “Week in the Highlands” celebration with “Empty Bowls”.

Held at Bellarmine University Frazier Hall, visitors are treated to food and drink with proceeds benefiting the Highland Community Ministries’ Individual and Family Assistance Program.

The cost is $30 for meal/potter’s bowl; $15 for meal only and $5 for children 12 and under.

If you’re a resident of the Highlands or not, it’s a chance to get out and advance your local community’s missions!

We all know October in Louisville is one of the best months of the year, and a perfect time to get out and enjoy the weather and support what’s happening around you!
