Happy Father’s Day weekend to ya. It’s this Sunday, June 16 (which means that three days after post time for this article, this opening will no longer be relevant, so if you’re reading it on Monday or later, just pretend Sunday hasn’t happened yet). What’s your father like? What’s your relationship like with him? My father always repeated a line he’d heard and liked, that his goal as a father was to raise his children to be better than him. (Not that he was deficient in any way, of course, quite the opposite, but you always strive for improvement, to be the best you can possibly be.) How am I doing, I suddenly wonder, on that account? It’s hard to say – honestly, he and I are working on completely different sets of standards. (I deviated from my projected path, you see.)
But we are getting off-topic. We are here to discuss this week’s installment in the Louisville Exclusives series at Village 8 Theaters. The film is Waterwalk, and it is about the relationship between a father and a son. Steve Faulkner is laid off from his job and his son, Justin, decides to take this opportunity to try to connect with him. How? By suggesting an intensive 1000 mile canoe trip following the Marquette/Joliet discovery route of the Mississippi River.
Waterwalk is scheduled to play at Village 8 until next Thursday, June 20. Village 8 is located at 4014 Dutchmans Lane. Further theater information and showtimes can be found at the Village 8 website.
(A side note: there is a fantastic film about a father/son reconnection attempt called It’s In the Blood – but it’s in an entirely different vein. It’s a psychological thriller in which said father and son retreat to the woods to try to reconnect after some distance following a horrific event in their lives, and it’s there that they have to face their demons – literally. It’s a locally made film as well, so check it out.
