My mind is a whirl. This film trailer I just watched felt inspiring, inspired. The fusion of art, love, and revolution is certainly something thought-provoking. I'm reminded of recent events. Things seem to have calmed down, but Occupy Wall Street was kind of a big deal. What happened to that? What's going on now? It came and it went and is anything different? I don't know. I didn't get involved – though I lent my spiritual support, I was caught up in my own life, raising a child, a failing marriage, and yes, my own creative pursuits. Another relationship has since come and gone, and I am still writing, though with yet to produce anything beyond my shorts Jimmy's Folly and Gloria Mundi (the latter of which some of you have seen). Getting there, though. In the meantime, the world goes on, Paula Deen is racist and her new cookbook subsequently shoots up thousands of points on Amazon (true story), and gay rights achieve a massive victory. So, take the good with the bad.
Enough of the ramble and on to the point! The film to be discussed: Something in the Air, by French filmmaker Olivier Assayas, and the newest installment in the Louisville Exclusives series at Village 8 Theaters. Gilles is a high school student in France in the politically-charged early-'70s, and his peers are socially active, fighting for change and positivity. Gilles, meanwhile, is caught up in his artistic and creative pursuits. He Feels Things, and needs these Things expressed – to the consternation of those around him who feel his time would be better spent working for social change.

(A side note: I am reminded of the excellent 2003 film The Dreamers by Bernardo Bertolucci [Last Tango in Paris] in which an American student living in France falls in with twins, a brother and sister. They are united in their love of film – and, ultimately, each other – amidst the backdrop of cultural revolution. It is a beautiful movie, essential for purveyors of films-about-films.)
