Bit to Do

I love the Oscars. It is an event I look forward to all year. Yes, it's very cheesy, and the writing is inexplicably horrible and the presenters are over-the-top and often inferior films are given recognition while much better movies remain unnoticed. That's why it makes for such a great drinking game! This year saw my household's third annual Oscars Drinking Game, and as usual I prepared by watching as many of the nominees as I could.

Every year, difficulties are presented when it comes to the category of Best Foreign Film. I love this category – each country selects their best film for consideration, and the selections can often be better than our own. However, since it can take some time for film exports to make their way to our theaters, enthusiasts often have to wait until late in the following year to see the nominees. So far this year we have had the opportunity to see two: the Belgian film “Bullhead,” which played at Village 8 for a week, and the winner of Best Foreign Film, Iran's “A Separation,” which played at Baxter Avenue Theater and at the Floyd Theater.

Now we have the opportunity to see the third of the five nominees: Village 8 Theater presents a one-week run of the Israeli film “Footnote” (original title: “הערת

שוליים

,” or “He'arat Shulayim”) as the newest installment in the Louisville Exclusives series. “Footnote” tells the story of a father and a son, both professors of Talmudic Studies. When the father is mistakenly awarded the honor of the Israel prize which was intended for the son, the son must decide whether to let his father have the glory or claim it for himself, dashing his father's dreams.

“Footnote” plays at Village 8 until next Thursday, May 17. Village 8 is located at 4014 Dutchmans Lane. Further theater information and showtimes can be found at the Village 8 website.
