Verizon Wireless (VZW) officially entered the 4G market in December 2010, launching in 38 markets with their 4G LTE network that touts speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G. Most recently, those that have 4G enabled devices may have noticed the rollout in downtown Louisville for Thunder Over Louisville and future plans for Derby day 4G LTE coverage.

Verizon’s 4G LTE network covers data rates, ranging from 5-12 Mbps on the downlink and 2-5 Mbps up. After Verizon Wireless turned on their 4G LTE network for Thunder Over Louisville, I was able to test their network speeds to see if they held up to the hype. Below is a video I created with an overview of the speed tests conducted (and a special “how to be a ninja” clip at the end).

According to PC Mag: In other professional speed tests taking place across the country, speeds were just as impressive: Slashgear in Phoenix, AZ reported 12.44/6.73 Mbps, GigaOM in Philadelphia, PA reported 11.7/5.6, Gizmodo in New York City reported 9.5/2.9 Mbps, and MSNBC.com in Seattle, WA recorded whopping speeds of 32.8/11.99 Mbps.

Currently, the 4G LTE network is only available in a select area of Louisville – primarily around the downtown region. However, after speaking to a local Verizon Wireless representative, he noted that they have plans to turn on their 4G LTE network at Churchill Downs in time for Derby. What about everyone else? Well, the representative also stated that their tentative plan is to have all of Jefferson County covered sometime in 2011, so stay tuned!
