It was a big weekend for University of Louisville sports teams.
First, the football team blitzed Boston College 38-19 in a key Atlantic Coast Conference game Saturday night thanks to three touchdowns, off the bench, by Reggie Bonnafon (two passing, one rushing) and three interceptions by Gerod Holliman.
Then, the men’s basketball team bombed Bellarmine University (and honorary Knight Patrick McSweeney) 82-57 in its final exhibition game Sunday afternoon.
Finally, Ivan Gutierrez’s goal in the 76th minute lifted the 19th-ranked men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over No. 2, and third-seeded, North Carolina on Sunday afternoon in an ACC Tournament quarterfinal match in Chapel Hill, N.C.
As a reward the Cards (9-6-3) get No. 1, and second-seeded, Syracuse in the tourney semifinals at 8 p.m. Friday night in Cary, N.C.
Here’s a quick look at what else happened in UofL sports over the weekend:
Senior men’s tennis standout Sebastian Stiefelmeyer lost in the Round of 16 in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. on Friday. Virginia’s Ryan Shane outlasted Stiefelmeyer, the tourney’s top seed, 7-6, 7-6. Stiefelmeyer finished the fall season with a 17-2 singles record. Meanwhile the rest of the team competed in the Georgia Bulldog Scramble in Athens, Ga.
The volleyball team dropped a pair of ACC road matches at Miami (Fla.) and Notre Dame over the weekend. The host Hurricanes swept the Cards 25-22, 25-21, 25-15 Friday night. Janelle Jenkins had nine kills and four blocks in a losing effort. Then, the host Fighting Irish outlasted Louisville 16-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-13 Sunday afternoon in South Bend,

tallied a team-high 14 kills and also recorded 10 digs in the loss. Two other Cards had double-doubles. Assumption alum Katie George finished with 47 assists and 14 digs while Jenkins tallied 13 kills and 15 digs.

(14-11, 6-7) next plays at Clemson at 7 p.m. Friday.
The ninth-ranked men’s and women’s swimming and diving team split its inaugural ACC meet. The men defeated visiting North Carolina 220-133 while the visiting Tar Heels topped the women 194-159 Saturday at Ralph Wright Natatorium.
