The Kentucky Autism Training Center at the University of Louisville is offering a series of regional workshops for parents, educators and other professionals to help them create a supportive, positive environment for those with autism.

Laura Ferguson, field training coordinator for KATC and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst with a specialty in autism, said the workshops focus on what parents and professionals can do to help those with autism get through ordinary, daily routines.

"Most of us can go through a daily routine without even thinking about it. But for individuals with autism tasks such as getting dressed, deciding what to eat or even greeting a friend can be challenging," Ferguson said. "This program provides tips and ideas to make each day go more smoothly."

The workshops, "Supporting Autism 24/7," will be held at various dates and locations across Kentucky as follows:

    • Oct. 14, Carlisle, Blue Licks Battlefield State Park
    • Oct 24, Corbin, Cumberland Falls State Park
    • March 4, 2012, Gilbertsville, Kentucky Dam State Park
    • March 23, Lucas, Barren River State Park
    • April 2, 2012, Carrollton, General Butler State Park
    • April 23, 2012, Greenup, Greenbo State Park
    • May 11, 2012, Falls of Rough, Rough River State Park

All workshops cost $30, run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time and include a lunch buffet and snacks.

To contact KATC, call 502-852-4631 or 800-334-8635. To register for the workshops, go to https://louisville.edu/education/kyautismtraining/events/KATC_workshop-registration/.

    About Roxane Haynes

I am a working mother of four kids, age five and under, this includes two singletons and a set of twins. When I say working, I mean that I stay at home with them, but work my butt off to take care of them and get the "usual" things done for our home. I also help my husband with our business when I can. B.K. (before kids) I worked in the Human Resource field. Stay At Home Mom is by far my favorite career choice to date.
