The Kentucky Autism Training Center at the University of Louisville is offering a series of regional workshops for parents, educators and other professionals to help them create a supportive, positive environment for those with autism.
Laura Ferguson, field training coordinator for KATC and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst with a specialty in autism, said the workshops focus on what parents and professionals can do to help those with autism get through ordinary, daily routines.
"Most of us can go through a daily routine without even thinking about it. But for individuals with autism tasks such as getting dressed, deciding what to eat or even greeting a friend can be challenging," Ferguson said. "This program provides tips and ideas to make each day go more smoothly."
The workshops, "Supporting Autism 24/7," will be held at various dates and locations across Kentucky as follows:
- Oct. 14, Carlisle, Blue Licks Battlefield State Park
- Oct 24, Corbin, Cumberland Falls State Park
- March 4, 2012, Gilbertsville, Kentucky Dam State Park
- March 23, Lucas, Barren River State Park
- April 2, 2012, Carrollton, General Butler State Park
- April 23, 2012, Greenup, Greenbo State Park
- May 11, 2012, Falls of Rough, Rough River State Park
All workshops cost $30, run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time and include a lunch buffet and snacks.
