We know, it’s not even Christmas yet. But that doesn’t mean it’s too early to start thinking about New Year’s…and the resolutions you never keep. To get your minds churning, we asked five locals this question: If you could go back 10 years and do something differently in your life, what would it be?

Kenny Hoerter, downtown YMCA’s executive director

“In college, I worked as an equipment manager for the University of Louisville’s football team. After graduating in 1998, I took an internship with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins as an assistant equipment manager during pre-season camp. My internship ended that summer. If I could go back 10 years, I would pursue a career in professional or college athletics in equipment management or as an administrator.”

    Gibbs Rounsavall, minimalist painter

“I would have stayed in Orozco. It’s a small area north of Roswell, N.M. I was 23 and in the middle of a solo cross-country trip, just me and my car. I stopped at a youth hostel for the night, which turned into a few days. The man who ran the hostel offered me a job to stick around as long as I wanted, but I was eager to move on, so I left. I was younger, and I thought I had all the time in the world. I have missed New Mexico since.”

    John Timmons, ear X-tacy’s owner

“I first met my wife Denise in October 2002. It was a blind date set up by my best friend, who just happens to be Denise’s hairdresser. I had never been on a blind date before, and we’ve been together ever since. I do believe in fate, but if I could go back 10 years I’d love to have met her and gotten to know her then.”

    Charla Young, WAVE-3 troubleshooter

“I would travel more. Recently, I’ve been to Jamaica, the Bahamas and Africa. As I look at the poverty outside the resorts in these areas, it lets me know that I have so much to be grateful for here at home.Traveling has put life in much better perspective for me.”

Debby Haynes, Ermin’s Bakery and Cafe owner

“It’s been since 1993 since I’ve had more than three (consecutive) days off. I would schedule myself a really good vacation so that I can be a better person to my employees and my customers and to myself and to my family. Where would I go? Probably somewhere sunny because Kentucky is cloudy six months out of the year.”
