It’s Thanksgiving eve and the question on everyone’s mind is, what’s there to do? For the most part, we’re all off on the holiday, friends and family are in for the weekend, and everyone isn’t worried about waking up at a decent hour so that they can make it work on time, so the notion that then comes to mind is, “Let’s get out, and get into something.”
Every year it’s same old thing amongst my group of friends, and you might say, it’s become our Thanksgiving ritual. It generally starts with a little pre-drinking after work, just before the sunset, and then once that dark cloak of the evening comes down we kick into full throttle. We hit the dive bars and low key drinking spots as we do every other weekend, and even they’re packed on this night. The Nach bar, The Back Door, Cahoots, and The Outlook are always on our list. We migrate to Bardstown road in hopes of finding some females and random run-ins with the unexpected, rather than the law as we drive around aimlessly with open containers. Anymore it’s just a sidebar that I rarely think about, and maybe that’s because we’re not only alcoholics, but reckless ones at that.
Bardstown road is typically where it’s at, and where we end up during most of the evening. Cars pack the street, and traffic creeps by at a snail’s pace while we drift from bar to bar with brew in hand. Obscenities are yelled from cars passing by, and the city lights guide our drunken wayward paths. My suggestion, from past experience of course, is to stay away from the countless yaeger bombs being pushed underneath of your nose, because blacking out, fighting, and being arrested are not things that generally pan out well, especially when it’s your folks that you have to call from jail. Drinking Jameson Irish whiskey is encouraged though, and if you chase it with Pabst Blue Ribbon then you’re going to be well on your way to having a stellar night.
Some local hot spots that will also be jumping are off course any bar on 4th Street, most anything on Bardstown Road or Baxter Avenue in the Highlands, as well as my hometown, Germantown. If you’re over in that area places like The Nach, Zeppelin Café, Check’s Café, The Old Hickory Inn, and Club 21 will be staying open late for the droves of drinkers out late for the pre-holiday celebration.
