Western's Ryan Taylor is having a very nice senior season. The 6-foot-6 University of Louisville commit is averaging 24 points and 13 rebounds per game. This week Taylor and his teammates are playing in the Gaslight Holiday Classic at Jeffersontown. I caught up with Taylor at the tournament.
Taylor has led the Warriors to a 5-2 record so far this season. They lost to Moore in the season opener but reeled o five straight win, before losing to Woodland Hills (PA) Tuesday night.
"The season is going good," Taylor said. "We lost our first game against Moore but we started playing much better. I'm trying to get my teammates more involved. I think we have a good team and we have the talent to make a run at state. We just have to play together and we should be fine."
Taylor puts his team first but he also has personal goals this season.
"I want to try and win Mr. Basketball," Taylor said. "I know Chane (Behanan) is the leading candidate but I want to try and challenge him for that. I basically just want to have a good senior season. I'm averaging a double-double right now and I want to keep that up."
Taylor, who is ranked No. 103 in Rivals top 150, committed to Rick Pitino and the University of Louisville in January of 2009. He didn't sing back in November, but that's not because he's re-thinking his commitment, he's simply waiting on the results of his test scorers.
"It's still a solid commitment," Taylor said. "I'm going to sign in the spring, I''m just waiting to get my test scorers to come in. As far as prep school, that's still up in the air."
The 6th Region is wide open. There are as many as five teams that could make it to Rupp Arena in March. If Taylor and his teammates keep working hard and playing as a team, they could make a deep run.
