I want to make a recommendation to you, in the spirit of supporting local film. There's a lot of talent here, you know – a lot of good stuff is happening. So, here's what you should do: go to Wild and Woolly Video, go to the Local Interests section, and find two movies there: Callus' Birthday Party and The Balloons Own the Police. These are two of the first five films by Beau Kaelin, high school biology teacher and movie theater manager extraordinaire. You may have also heard him on the Movie Meltdown podcast. And, of course, he makes movies. Good movies. Fun movies. Weird movies. This is good stuff. If you can find a copy, especially check out his fifth, Symbiosis.
Meanwhile, Kaelin has completed his sixth feature film, and it promises to be his best yet. It is called The Fated Assemblage of Dr. Malvagio, and he will be premiering it tomorrow, Saturday, at Village 8 Theaters. It is the story of a string of murders and the photographer who notices a pattern behind the dastardly deeds: they are all connected to members of a cult led by one Dr. Malvagio. For this film, Kaelin was inspired by classics of the Giallo genre, specifically the works of Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci, Mario Bava, and Sergio Martino, to name a few. It may get a little weird.
