On the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary of service to West Louisville youth, St. George's Community Center at 26th and Oak is making itself new. Its new name is St. George Scholar Institute. Its new tag line is: Embrace, Educate, Empower. St. George was founded in 1964 after police caught scores of children who had broken into a boarded up gym at 26th and Oak to play ball. The Episcopal Diocese of Kentucky treated the incident as a call to service and St. George has remained a community resource to the Parkland, Parkhill and California neighborhoods ever since. The Louisville Metro Council adopted a resolution honoring The Rev. Charles B. Tachau, the executive director, patron, leader and role model of St. George for over 20 years. Councilman David James presented Rev. Tachau with the proclamation. Mayor Fischer sent a proclamation honoring the work of St. George. Honorary event chair Phillip Bond credited his his many successes in sports, business and life to his early days at St. George as a child. Executive Director Arthur Cox also announced that St. George's would begin a campaign to enhance its gym---a fitting tribute to its origins.
