When one looks at the modern arenas in the city of Louisville, one venue seems to rein supreme the Yum Center.

Now, admittedly I wanted to do a couple more of the vintage arenas before I began highlighting the newest one, but then I began to think about the Yum Center. And, how it was built really with a historic bent, in many ways it’s a tribute to the arenas that came before it. With the “hall of fame” enclave, the banners, and of course Denny Crum court it really has become new based on tradition. And, for that reason I felt it was worthwhile to highlight this sports arena now.

After opening in 2010 it has become the arena of both the University of Louisville men’s basketball team as well as the women’s.

As well, it has become a venue where already many iconic shows have performed. For instance, I was actually at the Yum Center for it’s opening presentation, The Eagles. I have the T-Shirt  to prove it. And instantly, I along with everybody else there was blown away by the meticulous nature that it was put together.

The architect clearly had the desire and work ethic to put together an arena that the city could be proud of. Now, I’ve discussed the Yum Center’s predecessor, Freedom Hall, and how it drew so many television cameras and the like during it’s time; the Yum Center seems to have the same effect.

Will it have all the tenants that freedom hall has had and will continue to have through the years; only time will tell. What is true about the Yum Center though is that it represents more then basketball or a concert/event venue it represents a city that’s on the move. And, for that I think we can all support the Yum Center.

    About Dave Rose

Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
