For those unable to sit through one full-length play, two colleges and the Humana Festival offer multiple 10-minute and one-act plays for viewing pleasure this week.
The Humana Festival will present the Humana Festival Ten-Minute Plays while Bellarmine University will showcase Madthematics, and even Hanover College will present a series of one acts.
The Humana Festival will put on the Ten-Minute Plays on March 31 at 9 p.m. and April 1 at 4:30 p.m. Both performances are to happen in the Pamela Brown Auditorium at Actors Theatre, located at 316 West Main Street in downtown Louisville. Tickets for the show are $37 per person and can be purchased at the Actors Theatre website, Actors Theatre box office, or by calling the box office at 502-584-1205.
The Ten-Minute Plays will feature original works selected for the festival, including Kyle John Schmidt's The Dungeons and the Dragons, where three members of the "enchanted" world are forced into a world of reality. Also included is Hero Dad by Laura Jacqmin, dealing with single fathers and meeting women, and The Ballad of 423 and 424 by Nicholas C. Pappas, which looks at a freak of an apartment neighbor.
Not to be outdone, Bellarmine University has its own ten-minute festival, Madthematics: Second International Festival of New 10-Minute Plays. Performances are to happen March 28, 29, 30, and 31 at 8 p.m. each night at the Wyatt Center for the Arts, located on Bellarmine's campus at 2001 Newburg Road in the Highlands section of Louisville. Tickets, sold at the door only, are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.
Madthematics plays focus on the theme of mathematics, but the night will be much, much more interesting than those algebra classes. The night includes eight comedic, intellectual, and fun plays. Audience members will also have their chance to vote on a favorite at the end of the festival.
For those wanting to get out of town (and therefore avoid all the UK-UL hype and game), head to Hanover College for the directing class one acts. The one-acts will go on March 31 and April 1 at 7:30 p.m. each night in the Parker Auditorium at Hanover College, located at 484 Ball Drive in Hanover, IN.
