The exterior of Galerie Hertz can be described as many things—namely colorful, artistically cluttered and vibrant. Yet, Boris Zakic’s current display shhh, flicker provided a striking visual contrast upon entering the gallery, which held canvases filled with smooth textural elements and deceptively simple uses of paint.
Boris Zakic received an MFA at University of New Orleans in 2000 and the “Neue Dimensionen der Wissenschaft” Award by Göethe Intitut, Belgrade for Translation Paintings in 2004. He has since worked on Alizarine & Bronzino (2009), appeared at Cincinnati Fringe Fest (2009-2010), The Independents at Liverpool Biennial (2010) and more recently, at Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft in Louisville (2013).
This collection showcases Zakic’s distinct combination of classical realism and abstract expressionism. Elasticized tonal ribbons are drawn out until you think they may snap, finally unfurling into pools of rich, mellow color. What is sensational about Zakic’s work is his ability to develop intricate detail in an incredibly defined, minimalistic palate—most noticeable in his piece, Flickering.
