Getting in shape or reaching any goal you set for the New Year can be a challenge — and staying motivated is usually the hardest part. Experts say the keys to success include setting a realistic goal, finding an activity you enjoy doing and getting support from others along the way.

To help provide motivation and support, Snap Fitness is offering an innovative free contest. Called the “Snap Shape Up Challenge,” the contest kicks off January 26 and runs through March 8. Snap Fitness members of all ages and fitness levels will make their way across a giant 42-space game board as they exercise regularly to reach their goal and pursue weekly prizes.

Paul Webb, Lyndon and Jeffersontown Snap Fitness owner, explained, “When it comes to resolutions, everyone starts out fired up. The key to seeing results, though, is to stick with a fitness program beyond those first couple of weeks. That’s why we’re starting the Challenge later in January, when folks might be in need of that extra motivation to keep going! If they stay with the Challenge for those six weeks, the impact on their physiques and psyches will be enormous!”

Members start out by putting their goal for losing weight or inches in writing — a key strategy in helping people stick with any goal and hold themselves accountable.  Paul explained, “Everyone’s individual goal is posted on the mirrors in the club so that members feel like they are a community working together to achieve their goals. Everyone in the club gives support and encouragement to each other, which is key.”

The Shape Up Challenge works like this: Once members sign up for the Challenge, they get a game piece. For every 30 minutes of exercise, they move one space forward on the game board at the club. They can exercise anywhere — 30 minutes of any activity, in or out of the club, counts toward the goal. They can also track their progress on their Personal Web Page, which is free, and be entered in a drawing for weekly prizes, including retail gift cards and MP3 song cards.

Snap Fitness Members who complete the Shape Up Challenge will also be entered into a drawing for national prizes. Prizes include a $2,000 getaway vacation for two; an LCD hi-definition TV and Blu-Ray disc player, a Nintendo Wii and Wii Fit balance board, or a Best Buy gift card.

Snap Fitness offers ‘round-the-clock access to state-of-the-art cardio and strength-training equipment, allowing busy individuals the opportunity to stay active and fit without sacrificing time and convenience. The club’s “Basic 8” total-body, strength-training program is taught free to all members to help them get started. Members also receive a variety of free services, including a free $100 Fitness Assessment with a personal trainer, a free Online Training Center to track workouts and progress, and a free Personal Wellness Plan. As a bonus, members also receive a free month of Online Nutrition and Meal Planning, where they can create meal plans based on the foods and calories they need to get the most from their exercise.
