Every Shakespeare enthusiast has their own preferred method of relishing these timeless classics, whether it is through reading (or re-reading) the plays, or watching the variety of renditions with their favorite actors. Louisville is offering an opportunity to enjoy the summer sun and get your poetic fix! Kentucky Shakespeare is offering a Shakespeare in the Park program over the summer for free. Kentucky Shakespeare was named the Official Shakespeare Company of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Their mission is “grounded in the works of Shakespeare, we enrich our community by presenting accessible, professional theatre experiences that educate, inspire and entertain people of all ages.” They are one of the longest running Shakespeare in the Park programs in America since beginning their first play in 1960. Recently, they have completed a spring season of traveling to 9 parks around Louisville to perform Hamlet, but now they will be kicking off their summer season!
Running from June 11 to August 17, Kentucky Shakespeare is presenting a season of 8 productions over 10 weeks at the C. Douglas Ramey Amphitheatre in Old Louisville’s Central Park at 8 PM. This season they are presenting some of Shakespeare’s finest works: A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream, Henry V, Hamlet, Love’s Labour’s Lost, As You Like It, Pericles, King Lear, and Women of Will. Kentucky Shakespeare will be partnering with the Louisville Food Truck Association and Brown-Forman to provide food and a bar nightly. Seating will be first-come, first-serve, so make sure you grab your family and make your way to central park this summer!
