Second City Theatrical's It Takes a Ville! is a hilarious, entirely original revue all about Louisville. From riffs on big hats to hot browns (that's a meal, not a sophisticated sexual manuever), bluegrass and bourbon, some of the nation’s most skilled comedians explore the hilarious possibilities of our city with an original spin that only Second City can deliver.
It Takes a ‘Ville!, plays the Bingham Theatre (316 W. Main St.) Jan. 7 through Feb. 6 with preview shows Jan. 4–6. Tickets start at $29 and can be purchased by calling the Actors Theatre box office at 502-584-1205 or online.
Second City writers Ed Furman and Tim Baltz spent four days in Louisville last September (so there might be Aqua Buddha jokes!). They visited well-loved Louisville venues and met with educators, restaurateurs, business owners, UK and UofL sports fans, arts organizations and community groups including the Transit Authority of River City, St. Stephen's Baptist Church, the Pendennis Club, the Kentucky Derby Museum, Brown-Forman, the Louisville Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Louisville Central Community (noticeably not mentioned: Karen Sypher's defense team).
And director Mick Napier hails from Hazard in Eastern Kentucky, so he's probably familiar with mocking our big-city ways. Previously, Second City has written city-specific revues for Atlanta, Denver, Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Arizona, Cincinnati, Ogdenville, North Haverbrook, and Brockway. (Thankfully Shelbyville is yet to receive the Second City treatment.)
For 50 years Second City has been one of the world’s most celebrated comedy troupes. Known for cutting-edge satiric revues and presenting the best in Chicago-style comedy, which is a deep-dish style of comedy with a buttery three-inch crust, every night of the week. It also launched the careers comedy superstars including Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Mike Myers, and Stephen Colbert.
