Today is a very good day! Why, you ask? Today the announcement came that Roger Waters is coming to Louisville June 10, 2012 and will appear at the YUM! Center. You know what that means-no road trip this time around. Finally, fans of The Wall and Pink Floyd can see one of two musical geniuses behind Pink Floyd’s 11th studio album, released in 1979. Although many chose sides in the dramatic feud between Roger Waters and David Gilmour, a true Floyd fan can only faintly smile, and spend a small fortune go to the show. Waters toured North America earlier in the year, but only came as close as Columbus, Ohio-a charming 3 hour drive from here.
Waters’ previous engagement in Ohio packed the house and he played The Wall from start to finish-both sides and holy hell what a show! I am fortunate as I saw Waters perform two prior shows. The first show I saw was in Cincy and made the hair on the back of my neck stand up as he played Animals and Dark Side of the Moon. Earlier this year I traveled up to Columbus to see The Wall Live thinking that would be my last opportunity to see Waters and I was super stoked about hearing The Wall live.
For many, The Wall is the iconic release from Floyd and theorists toil about the inspiration behind The Wall. Pink Floyd performed The Wall as a rock opera centered around the character Pink and documents his life struggles including a troubled childhood and divorce. Pink Floyd-The Wall is a feature length film adapted from the album; a great flick. As Waters approaches 70, he still brings his A Game to the stage with all the theatrical drama known to be a trademark for Waters and Pink Floyd. Waters continues to travel the world and share the love Pink Floyd brought to so many people. Clean guitars, deep bass, and amazing sounds make for a perfect for a night of jammin’ old school. Making the top 100 albums of all time as ranked by Rolling Stone is not a small feat and The Wall sits Comfortably Numb at #87. I suppose someone will have to drag me to the upcoming show kicking and screaming-probably not.
