Summer in Kentuckiana really isn’t complete until you’ve visited Holiday World, and what better day to go than a day filled with music. Rock the World was a hit again this weekend. The park was packed with fans and bands, but, despite the crowds, Holiday World remained the efficient, family-friendly park we’ve come to expect over the years.

The headliner, Switchfoot, performed an excellent set. A true rock and roll group hailing from California, Switchfoot has had much success winning both Grammy and Dove awards over the past 8 albums. With hits like “Meant to Live” and “This is Your Life,” it wasn’t long until the whole crowd was singing along and dancing.

Portland-based band Kutless opened for Switchfoot. I had hoped that Kutless would perform something from their debut album; however, they stuck with their famous praise and worship sound. Lead singer, Jon Micah Sumrall’s vocals are to be praised. He sounds just as good live as he does recorded.

Audio Adrenaline performed before Kutless. A long time band with new and fresh faces, Audio Adrenaline performed old favorites like “Big House” and “Never Gonna Be as Big as Jesus” plus their new hit “Kings and Queens.” I’m still not sure how I feel about former DC Talk singer Kevin Max being the new lead singer for Audio Adrenaline. Though I loved both bands as a teenager, it was a bit strange to hear someone else singing my favorite songs.

Newcomer Adam Cappa performed as well as many regional bands throughout the day. When guests needed a break from the heat (or the motion of a coaster), a concert wasn’t far away.

It was announced that Holiday World would be hosting a third Rock the World next year, and I know I’ll be going!
