They’re off to a great start.
With their premiere production, Eve Theatre Company is making it known that there is indeed, room for one more theatre company in Louisville.
Love, Loss and What I Wore at the Henry Clay Theatre features five women, all dressed in fashionable black, sitting on stools on an empty stage, save for a simple hanging projection screen.
And that is perfect.
Because the emphasis here is not on the action or the scenery, but on the words. And on the stories. And on the heart.
These five women, in sometimes emotional, often comedic vignettes, tell the history of their lives—their loves, their mishaps, their tragedies—pulled together by the unifying and ageless struggle that women have with clothing.
To be clear, Nora and Delia Ephron, the playwrights, have penned a jewel. But it is the women of Eve who make that jewel sparkle.
A truly ensemble piece, the cast works well together, helping the audience shift the focus at the correct time, and never once upstaging each other. The interplay between the actors and the pacing of the production is solid.
The audience approved. With each new story, the women in the room laughed and groaned knowingly as the characters related the trials of losing that perfect shirt, buying bras, and the mantra oft-repeated through the generations whilst staring into the closet, “I have nothing to wear.”
The 90-minute production (no intermission) sails by in a wink. And by the end, one might feel that these five women are no longer strangers performing on a stage, but longtime friends, who have opened up to share their stories and their hearts.
Love, Loss and What I Wore continues Sunday, November 4 at 2:30. Performances run Thursday through Sunday until November 18. Tickets are $22/$19 for students and seniors, and may be purchased at the door or by calling 502-583-8222.
Eve Theatre Company is partnering with Dress for Success for this production, and encourages patrons to bring gently used professional clothing for donation.
All performances will be held at the Henry Clay Theatre, on the 3rd floor of the Henry Clay Building, 604 South Third Street in Louisville.
