    Bit to Do

Downtown regulars have probably noticed the number of empty and abandoned lots that pepper the city’s grid. Rather than allow these places to continue on as canvases for teen tagging, the city is utilizing these spaces for the community – they’ll begin to house pop-up shops, beer gardens, outdoor cafes and events.

The first lot to be revitalized will be the space behind the facades of 615-621 West Main Street. From September 19, 2014 to October 25, 2014. To launch the new space, ReSurfaced is hosting an all day party. From 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. September 19, stop by this spot just off the Belvedere for some music and celebration. There will be beer and wine for sale, food trucks, Heine Brothers coffee and, after 7 p.m., live music from Junk Yard Dogs and Night Visions Radio. Mayor Fischer will be joining the festivities around 4 p.m.

Ultimately, this initiative is about turning the unused urban space – much of which may become a nuisance or eyesore – into unique spaces that improve the community. Beyond this, the project can act as a, “…temporary initiative to illustrate the economic potential and benefit of incrementally activating currently unproductive spaces…” according to the website.

The initiative is sponsored by several local businesses and is operating, in part, thanks to the help of volunteers. Look out for more from ReSurfaced, as they begin to make their way to more lots around the city. View the calendar of events here.
