What year is it again?
Is it 1986 again?
Are we passing vague black and white movie posters with Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy, and “the other guy” from “Two and a Half Men”? To be fair, until he was “the other guy” from “Two and a Half Men” actor John Cryer was perpetually known as “Ducky” the lovelorn music nerd from “Pretty in Pink.” A John Hughes movie with a killer soundtrack and an even more killer theme song by the Psychedelic Furs.
Fast forward to 2015 and the Mercury Ballroom on Sunday and the Psychedelic Furs will be taking the stage to throw everybody back to the good fishnet and Aqua Net, synthed-out rager.
The Psychedelic Furs were a British band that emerged from the late 70’s punk scene in London, but quickly adapted with onset of New Wave, following the direction of bands like The Clash and New Order who were rapidly abandoning their punk roots, and flocking (like seagulls) toward synthesizers, pastel suits, and pop-oriented rebellion. This sparked a cultural shift that redefined social, sexual, and personal morays in the ultra-conservative climate of Regan-era America.
The Furs blew onto the scene in 1981 with their second album “Talk Talk Talk” and would go on to release five more albums in the next decade. Their list of hit songs includes: “Dumb Waiters,” “Heaven,” “Love My Way,” and of course “Pretty in Pink.”
The band went on hiatus in the early 1990’s, but reformed in 2001, and have been consistently on the road playing their much beloved catalog to legions of adoring (and aging) 80’s brats.
The Psychedelic Furs will be at Mercury Ballroom Sunday August 23rd the show starts at 8:00 PM tickets are $28, and The Church will open the show.
