In recent years the sport of Lacrosse has become more and more so a fixture in local athletics, at the high school and college levels there has been an outpouring of interest in recent seasons.

With that in mind, the upstart professional Lacrosse league, the North American Lacrosse League, has announced the team of the Kentucky Stickhorses, a new team based right here in the Derby City. In fact, according to the league the number of individuals playing Lacrosse has doubled since 2001.

The league hopes to field teams all over the U.S., and this team which will call Freedom Hall home is just one of the newer additions.

This inaugural season, the Stickmen are set to square off in seven home games. Currently, season tickets are available from the team’s website here.

The league’s story actually came from a proportional imbalance in North American lacrosse, according to Selina Reda, of the league’s corporate sales office, “The league came into existence because there was a need for the American college lacrosse player to play indoor lacrosse, 90 percent of the National Lacrosse League players are Canadian. With the NALL, 90 percent will be American.”

The most recent edition to the league is the Hershey Haymakers, based out of Pennsylvania but other current teams include the Charlotte Copperheads, the Jacksonville Bullies, and the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Shamrocks.

Recently, the Stickhorses have announced that coaching the team will be Trinity High School Lacrosse coach, Pete Schroeder.

The league as well as the team are both growing very quickly now so it’s difficult to tell where all of the teams will be located and all of the names coming to Louisville, however one thing’s clear this league means a tremendous boost for the game of lacrosse in the U.S.

    About Dave Rose

Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
