Pandora Productions has teamed with sponsor JustFundKY to bring a staged reading of “8” to Louisville audiences this weekend.
The play, quickly becoming a national sensation, is written by screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, who also penned J. Edgar and the Academy Award winning movie, Milk.
"8" chronicles the Federal District Court trial regarding Proposition 8 in California, which took away marriage rights for same-sex couples.
Proposition 8 was passed in November of 2008.
In 2010, the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) successfully challenged Proposition 8 in the federal case Perry v. Schwarzennegger, which overturned the proposal.
A stay was placed on the ruling which remains in effect today, barring any same-sex marriages from occurring in California until all appeals are decided. The United States Supreme Court is expected to rule on the case in mid-2013.
The play “8” contains dialogue from actual court transcripts and presents both sides of the debate. Performances will be followed each night with a time for discussion.
"8" will be staged at the Henry Clay Theatre, 604 S. Third Street, Thursday, January 3 through Saturday, January 5 at 7:30pm.
Tickets are $18, with a portion of the proceeds going to the American Foundation for Equal Rights. Tickets are available online or by calling 502-216-5502.
