It used to be that fresh popcorn, nicely padded seats, a touch more knee and elbow room, and expanded screens were the extent of the amenities offered by the metro area’s better movie theaters. Then came bigger multiplexes with more screens as well as arcades, surround-sound, cupholders and — when Baxter Avenue Theatres opened four years ago — visually pleasing decor. Soon thereafter the bar was raised even higher when 19-screen Tinseltown USA introduced deep-slope stadium seating (plus lots more legroom) to the Louisville movie-watching experience, eliminating the problem of big-haired women and tall guys in baseball caps.
Now we have two more multiplexes with stadium seating — the 10-screen Broadway Cinemas, which also offers a 30-game arcade, and the 20-screen Stonybrook Cinemas. The improvements don’t stop there. One by one, theaters are adding espresso bars, hand-dipped ice cream, hot dog and burger stands, pizza service, phone-ahead credit-card ticket buying and more.
Where does all this leave the budget-conscious moviegoer? Well, there’s always the area’s two second-run theaters, Village 8 and Green Tree 4, where a couple of bucks (or less) will buy you an after-all-the-hype-is-over cinema experience.
Here’s some pertinent information on the metro area’s 12 movie houses. All phone numbers are in area code 502 unless specified.
