The Moth GrandSLAM Championship: Fish Out of Water

If you can brave the cold temperatures and slick streets Friday evening, The Bomhard Theater inside The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts at 501 W. Main St. will make it worth your while. The Moth GrandSLAM Championship kicks off at 8 p.m., where 10 winners from previous StorySLAMs face off with their stories in the hopes of becoming the Moth GrandSLAM Story Champion.

For those who have never been to a Moth gathering before, each participant tells a five-minute story based around a previously chosen theme. The stories must be true, and should be entertaining. The audience then votes on whose story was best, with the winner going on to the GrandSLAM. The GrandSLAM follows the same rules as StorySLAMs, with the winner becoming GrandSLAM Story Champion, who will then perform in New York at The Moth’s annual Moth Ball in May.

The 10 participants who will battle for the title are Bill Bohnert, Mike Brooks, Eric Call, Frank D’Amato, Billy Goldsmith, Chris Gray, David Holzknecht, Scott Holzknecht, Randi Skaggs and Sara Thompson. The theme for the competition is “Fish Out of Water.” The competition is sponsored by WFPL, and is hosted by WFPL Director of News and Editorial Strategies Gabe Bullard. Tickets are $15, and you are strongly encouraged to purchase your tickets at the box office in order to avoid convenience fees. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the competition begins at 8 p.m.

For more information and to buy tickets, visit The Kentucky Center’s page for the event, or call 1-800-775-7777.

The next StorySLAM will be held on the 24th at Headliners at 8 p.m. Tickets will be $8.
