Monster Truck Jam at Broadbent Arena was a hit with fans on January 27. The show wouldn't be complete without some sort of destruction, and the show didn't disappoint.
The first thing I have to say is that Monster fans seem to want to get in on the action at least a little. Walking through the parking lot was an experience. Trucks everywhere were parked haphazardly. It's as if the white lines marking parking spots didn't exist. One car sat propped half in a parking spot, half on a curb.
Next, it was on to the "Will call" lines to pick up our passes. I loved the amusing door guy outside who answered "DO you know where 'will call' is?" with "I guess the same place Bob calls". The lines outside the "will call" were pretty long. Most people flocked to the crowd standing outside the lines, just accepting their place and the long wait ahead. What they didn't notice like some smart folks were the "will call" windows inside the doors right next to the outward facing windows. The lines inside were shorter. Here's a tip, though. THere's a SECRET "will call". If you walk through the door on the other side of the indoor "will call" windows, there is one more "will call" window around the corner. There was only one group ahead of us. It pays to scout your locations rather than follow the herd.
This year's Monster Jam featured Monsters like Heavey Hitter, Raminator, Samson, Maximum Destruction, Ramunition, and Wolverine. The show opened with four wheeler races, and then moved into the Monster truck races. Heavy Hitter came out ahead in his first round but lost to Wolverine in the next. Raminator ended up winning the final round and celebrated by doing donuts that showered dirt so far up into the stands, it covered my phone screen in the upper level seating. I was impressed.
In between monster truck events, the four wheelers would make another appearance. I can't help but think they're so cute the way they zip out around the track and then right back out through the exit without a pause. It reminds me of the clowns that come out between circus acts. They'd probably hate to hear me call them cute or compare them to clowns, but they're so little compared to the monster trucks. We like to close one eye and squish them with our fingers.
Before the second part of the Monster events, there was a motocross exhibit, which is always awe inspiring. It's so cool to see people fly up a ramp on a motobike and do flips through the air before landing on the opposite ramp. It seemed to be the favorite for the boys with me. One of the greatest audience moments came near the very end of the night. The last truck to perform blew a tire out when he landed from a jump. The audience was ecstatic and booed when the truck didn't win.
You still have a chance to catch Monster Jam tonight at Broadbent Arena. Parking is $8. Tickets for kids (ages two to twelve) are just $5 while other seats begin at $22. fans with tickets to the Saturday show (January 28) can see these monsters up close and meet the drivers by attending the Party in the Pits from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Free pit passes are available at participating Advance Auto Parts locations beginning January 9. Pit passes will also be available at the box office or through Ticketmaster for an additional fee. Fans must have a Saturday, January 28 event ticket and a pit pass to enter.
