Have you seen that movie Birdemic? Don't. Don't even worry about it. Trust me: I am a purveyor of bad film. I love it. I will watch a poorly-made film and unironically declare it to be high art. (See: The Period, Mr. Bricks, The Wizard of Gore). This is crap, and not specifically because it's poorly made. It's so bad that there are only two explanations I can fathom: either the filmmaker, James Nguyen, was immensely lazy and didn't care about even trying (for a bad movie to be secretly good, the filmmaker must be really trying and failing spectacularly), or he was intentionally making the worst movie possible – and he way overshot, because nothing about this as a potential parody is clever. It's wretched. I bring this up because it was inspired by The Birds (and An Inconvenient Truth, apparently), which we will get to in a moment.
But first: yes: we are here to talk about this week's installment of Hitchcock at the Palace! First up, tonight, Friday, is the Big One: Psycho. You know it, you love it. Janet Leigh is Marion Crane, a secretary who decides to engage in some thievery to the tune of $40,000. Skipping town, she stops for the night at the Bates Motel, where she meets the sweet proprietor, Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins). He is so sweet, he loves his mother so much. After all, a boy's best friend is his mother...
Tomorrow, Saturday, the Palace will be showing The Birds. It takes place in a quiet town in Northern California where nothing much happens – until the town is beset upon by birds, vicious creatures with beaks and claws, intent on making life for the residents hell. Why? You'll have to find out – maybe.
