Most of us know someone whose life has been touched by Multiple Sclerosis or another autoimmune disease. For me it's my mother-in-law who lives with MS. So when I was asked to be a judge for the MS Society's doughnut building contest. I was happy to help.
At first I couldn't wrap my mind around what was going to happen. Were they topping the doughnuts with their own creations and handing them out to eat? What happened was actually way cooler and more fun than that: teams were each given a dozen doughnuts, stir sticks, plastic knives, and toothpicks and instructed to build something with them.
The creativity was amazing. I saw a fish, an elephant, a Conestoga Wagon, the St. Louis Arch, a robot, a helicopter, and many more. The overall winner was the Loch Ness Monster, made entirely out of doughnuts.
