It's not the rolling hills of Ireland or even the the Scottish Highlands, but Bellarmine University's beautiful, hilly campus will again host the Louisville Irish Fest. This weekend, September 27th and 28th, come celebrate your Irish heritage, or just your love of Celtic culture and brewing talents.

In addition to a marketplace with breathtaking jewelry and other trinkets, live music in three locations, and delicious food and alcohol, there will be captivating history talks indoors. These include lectures on: Irish High Crosses, Brian Boru, and Louisville's Irish Roots. This year's Irish Fest will also feature a talk on Women's Role in Ireland's Struggle for Freedom.

The subject of Irish history in general is not one commonly approached in great detail, at least in this part of the country. An unfortunate side effect of this is that the women's half the story is often left untold. This is not a phenomenon unique to Irish women, but if there is any truth to the stereotypical Irish stubbornness, this talk is sure to provide some awe-inspiring accounts of some incredible women.

The talk will cover some of the most famous women in the past 100 years, like the Countess Markievicz, Bernadette Devlin, and Mary Robertson.  Markievicz was a nationalist and founder of the para-military group Fianna Éireann, Devlin is an strong-willed political activist, and Robertson was the first female president of Ireland. Since historians breathe life into their studies in a way that only they can, listening to their narratives of the contribution of these women is promising.

The “Women’s Role in Ireland’s Struggle for Freedom” lecture will occur at 3:00 on Saturday September 27th and at 2:30 on Sunday September 28th. All history talks will occur in Frazier Hall.

    About Rebecca Ball

As great lover of books and adventure, I grew up wanting to be anywhere else. I satiated some my wanderlust in the castles and expansive forests in Europe over the past few years. Now, I live in the city that will always be home with a cat who thinks she's a person.
