Louisville, it is time to get revved up for The Rev! Because Reverend Horton Heat is about to roll into town and rock-a-billy our faces off.
Barreling out of east Texas, Reverend Horton Heat and his rock-a-billy power trio that originally came together 30 years ago. The group is fronted by singer/songwriter The Reverend Horton Heat, as well, it’s like Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson, and Hootie syndrome, where the front man adopted the name of the band. Playing around their hometown of Dallas it took the band nearly five years before releasing their landmark debut album “Smoke ‘em If You Got ‘em” on the legendary indie-rock label SubPop. The same Seattle based label that would later serve Nirvana to the world on a silver platter.
They are different sort of band, considering they cut their teeth during the height of the early/mid 90’s alt-rock reign. The Rev, however, bears the influence of a band like Stray Cats, while all of their peers were busy imitating the Pixies.
The band has continued to write, record, and release albums for past 25 years now, with a catalog of nearly a dozen albums bearing tongue-in-cheek titles like: “The Full-Custom Gospel Sounds of The Reverend Horton Heat,” “Liquor in the Front,” and “Spend a Night in the Box.” All the while they have consistently been on the road playing night after night to their loyal, and often overzealous legion of fans. The band’s live show is second to none – a kitschy, high energy romp that throws back to a classic era in music, with a modern (and sometimes off-color) twist.
The Reverend Horton Heat is currently on the road supporting their critically acclaimed, 2014 album “The Rev,” a nickname for the band that their hardcore fanbase has adopted over the years. They will be performing at Mercury Ballroom on June 11th at 8:00 PM. Tickets are available for $18.00; Nekromantix and Whiskey Shivers will also be on the bill.
